What is a Zinc Selenide Window?
A Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) window is an optical flat made from ZnSe crystal, known for its excellent transparency in the 8–12 μm infrared range. It is commonly used in IR systems where high transmission and low absorption are required.
ZnSe windows are yellow to orange in color, non-hygroscopic, and chemically stable in normal atmospheric conditions.

ZnSe is ideal for high-power CO₂ laser applications due to its low absorption at 10.6 μm and high resistance to thermal shock.
Light Transmission of Zinc Selenide
Zinc Selenide offers high transmission from visible to far-infrared regions. The transmission is typically over 70% from 0.8 μm to 14 μm, with peak transmission exceeding 90% between 8 μm and 12 μm.

With anti-reflective (AR) coatings, transmission can reach over 95% at specific wavelengths. Coatings can be optimized for 3–5 μm, 8–12 μm, or other custom bands.
ZnSe Refractive Index
The ZnSe refractive index varies slightly across the spectrum. At 10.6 μm, it is approximately 2.403, which makes it a good choice for use in infrared laser systems, ensuring minimal beam distortion.
